Current policy

https://www.stockton.gov.uk/4076.aspx

The development plan currently comprises:

 Local Plan (1997)- saved policies

Local Plan Alteration Number 1 (2006)- saved policies

 Core Strategy (2010)

Joint Minerals and Waste Core Strategy and Policies and Sites LDDs (September 2011)

The documents which form the development plan provide a detailed framework within which planning applications are determined. It aims to balance the need for development with the protection of the heritage, environment and character of the area.

Upon adoption the emerging Stockton-on-Tees Local Plan will replace all of the above documents with the exception of those relating to minerals and waste.

The Local Plan sets out a vision for the future development of the Borough in relation to housing, the economy, community facilities and infrastructure up to 2032. A Draft Local Plan was subject to consultation in late 2016. Comments received have now been reviewed and the Council have prepared the Publication Draft Local Plan.

The Stockton-on-Tees Local Plan was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate on 21 December 2017.  On 2 January 2018 the Planning Inspectorate wrote to the Council to inform them that in response to the submission, the Secretary of State, in accordance with section 20 of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 (as amended) has appointed Matthew Birkinshaw BA (Hons) MSc MRTPI to conduct the examination to determine whether the Stockton-on-Tees Local Plan is sound.

All updates about the Local Plan examination process, timetable and available information can be found on the Stockton-on-Tees Local Plan Examination webpage (https://www.stockton.gov.uk/economic-regeneration-and-transport/economic-strategy-and-spatial-planning/the-emerging-local-plan/local-plan-examination/).

The Publication Draft Local Plan was available for comment between 25 September and 6 November 2017. All comments received have been submitted to the Secretary of State and will be considered as part of the public examination by the independent Planning Inspector.

The Local Plan will, when adopted, replace the adopted Core Strategy, the saved policies of the adopted Stockton on Tees Local Plan and Alteration No. 1. Alongside the Minerals and Waste Core Strategy and Policies and Sites DPDs and a number of adopted Supplementary Planning Documents the Local Plan will provide the policy basis for the determination of planning applications within the Borough.

What documents have been submitted and how can they be viewed

The public examination will be of the Publication Draft Local Plan which has been submitted to the Secretary of State. These documents are listed under the heading ‘The Publication Draft Local Plan’ below.
